Influences That Affect Child and Young Peoples Development

Children will come from a diverse range of backgrounds including family environments cultures and circumstances. A child is at school from a very young age to late teens and during this time many families will go through significant changes. Sometimes however schools may not always be aware of these changes. Any one of these happenings may affect their emotional and or intellectual development, this in turn can affect their behaviour in school and therefore their ability to learn. Sometimes it can also affect their physical development, for example some children may development a speech impediment such as a stutter.


Cultural differences
Children with different cultural background will be influenced by several factors such as religion, beliefs and their families. These children will be exposed to different attitudes and lifestyles and they may celebrate different festivals. For example the children's cultural beliefs or practice may cause the children emotional conflict when they want to participate in an activity such as physical development which goes against their families wishes or religious beliefs. Family breakup

Children who have parents that are going through a breakup may show emotional turmoil. Their behavior may change or they may become withdrawn. A family breakup would affect a child's emotional development and could affect their intellectual development. Introduction of a new partner

Some children may find it hard adjusting to a new partner. They may not like them or they may feel jealous of them. Bereavement
Bereavement can affect children's emotional development in a big way. They may also be too upset to concentrate and may fall behind with their school work so affect their intellectual development. Illness

A close family member suffering from illness or disease can have a huge impact on a child's emotional and intellectual development.

Moving house
Moving house can be a stressful time for everyone. Not only leaving behind friends and family but sometimes having to start a new school. Some children don't adapt very well to change. Some children find it hard to make new friends. This can have a huge impact on their emotional and intellectual development

Moving country
Some children will have come from another country. This can be a stressful time for them. Leaving behind everything they have ever known and starting a new. This would affect a child's development emotionally, physically and intellectually.

Violence in the child's home will have a very negative affect on a child Not only emotionally but intellectually and sometimes physically. A child that has to put up with violence in the home may become very nervous, anxious and depressed and withdrawn which could lead to a speech impediment such as a stutter. Which would then affect his/her social and emotional development along with affecting his/her learning development. Alcohol/drug abuse

Many children's parents will be alcohol or drug abusers. If the mother drank or took drugs when pregnant this could affect a child's physical and mental development. If the child grows up surrounded by alcohol or drugs this could affect their emotional development and in turn affect their intellectual development. Absent parents

Some children's parents will be absent from their child's life a huge amount either because of work or maybe they are in prison. This can have a huge emotional impact on the child. The child may have behaviour issues and in turn this will affect their learning abilities. Love and affection

Some children are starved of love and affection. This can and will affect all aspects of a child's development. The emotional care that babies, children and young people receive seems to make a significant difference to their physical well being, behaviour and learning. Diet
