Physical development

Physical development is the development of gross motor skills and fine motor skills the milestones below are a guide only as all children develop individually and may gain different skills at different times to other children. Genetics, size at birth, body build, nutrition and culture also effect the age at which you acquire these skills. Age

A birth a baby will lie in a foetal position with their knees tucked up, they will be unable to raise their head and it will fall backwards if they are pulled into a sitting position. They will be gaining early control of their eye movement, if they are held upright they will open their eyes, they will react to sudden sounds and close their eyes if there is a bright light. 3 months

By 3 months a babies movements switch from being reflexes to voluntary movements. when a baby is lying down their pelvis will be flat, they will be able to held sitting with their back and neck firm however their lower back is still weak. They will be able to make fists with both hands and also grab objects when placed in their hands. 6 months

By 6 months a baby will have a well established visual sense. They will be able to lift its head and shoulders whilst laying on its stomach and will be able to sit up with support. Babies at this age will be able to stand and jump whilst holding onto an adult supporting them. They will be able to pick up a cube with the palmer grasp and transfer objects from one hand to the other. 9 months

By 9 months a baby will be able to sit unsupported and will be able to wiggle and possibly crawl. They will be able to pick up objects with the pincer grasp and will release objects by dropping them, if they drop objects on the floor they will look for them to see where its gone. They also like to bang objects together and will hold their bottle while feeding. 12 months

A 1 year a child will be able to stand alone for a second or two then fall down with a bump they will also be able to stand holding onto furniture and walk holding hands with another person some may be able to walk unaided. They will be able to pull themselves up to a standing position and sit down deliberately. Will be able to point at objects and pick up small objects. 15 months

At 15 months a child will be able to crawl up the stairs frontwards and crawl back down the stairs backwards, they will be able to kneel unaided and there balance is poor so will still be unstable on feet and fall over quite a bit. They will be able to place objects precisely and build a tower of two blocks they may also be able to turn pages of a picture book but may not be able to do one at a time. 18 months

By 18 months children should be able to walk unaided and squat to pick toys up without falling over, they should also be able jump with both feet and walk up and down the stairs by themselves. They should be able to drink out of a cup without spilling. They will also show preference towards one hand and build a tower of 3 or 4 blocks. May also be able to throw a ball. 2 years

At the age of 2 children should be able to kick a large ball, they should be able to walk up and down the stairs with two feet on each step. Children may be able to run as well as being able to squat with ease and be able to rise to standing again without using their hands. They should be able build a tower of...
