Child Development Project

While children are unique in their own way, it is helpful to have some feel of what children might be able to do at different ages. This is because it is known that children’s development does follow a pattern. Knowing the developmental needs and what you might expect to see at different ages can help you to support children’s development. It can also help you to identify children who may not be following the usual pattern and so might need additional support, either within your setting or from other professionals.

You are required to research the specific areas of child development over the following age ranges and complete the charts.

Physical Development

| Stage of Development|
Newborn| * Mostly sleeps. * Is able to suck. * Hands are often fisted.| 0-3months| * Arm, fingers and legs move freely. * Begins to hold objects when placed in hand. * Tries to lift head.| 3-6 months| * Head control, moves head to follow people and objects. * Brings object to mouth when placed in hands. * Sits up with support.| 6-9 months| * Begins to sit unsupported. * Rolls over. * Starts to move around e.g. crawling.| 9-12 months| * Can move around by crawling or bottom shuffling. * Is able to walk with hand held. * Can pull up to standing position.| 1-2 years| * Walks well and tries to run. * Holds crayons and scribbles. * Is able to stack objects such as blocks.| 2-3 years| * Climbs on furniture, stairs and play apparatus. * Is able to dress and undress themselves with simple clothing. * Fine motor skills improving, better control of crayons.| 3-5 years| * Is usually toilet trained, clean and dry throughout the day. * Competent at gross motor skills e.g. jumping, and climbing. * Fine motor skills are improving e.g. can use scissors.| 5-8 years| * Has improved fine motor skills, is able to cut complex shapes. * Enough muscle co-ordination to swim, skate and climb. * Learns to ride a bicycle.| 8-10 years| * Grows taller and thinner. * Can dress and undress themselves including fastenings and laces. * Fine motor skill improve, handwriting becomes easier and neater.| 10-16 years| * Improved fine motor makes handwriting easier and more legible. * Can ride a bicycle with competence and confidence. * Grows taller and thinner and experiences changes of puberty.| 16-19 years| * Reaches physical maturity, physical features become shaped and defined.|

Intellectual Development

Newborn| * Is able to track people with eyes. * Recognises mother’s voice.| 0-3months| * Concentrates on familiar voices rather than unfamiliar ones. * Responds to bright colours and bold images. * Explores by putting things in mouth.| 3-6 months| * Shows an interest in what is happening around them. * Recognises familiar faces. * Recognises certain sounds and objects.| 6-9 months| * Searches for hidden or dropped objects. * Explores close environment around them, has no sense of danger. * Shows interest in everything around them.| 9-12 months| * Is interested in small objects and toys and reaches out for them. * Looks in the right direction for things that have fallen. * Starts to look at and feel small objects before putting in mouth.| 1-2 years| * Is able to follow single step instructions * Is able to match basic colours and shapes * Is able to recognise items from pictures and books| 2-3 years| * Enjoys imaginative play. * Is able to follow two step instructions. * Beginning to show awareness of right and wrong.| 3-5 years| * Longer attention span spends longer on activities. * Is able to follow 2-3 step instructions. * Can organise materials, groups and matches objects.| 5-8 years| * Enjoys reading together and on own. * Has developed a much longer...
