The Sequence and Rate of development from 0-19 years old: Task 1:1 Child development is how a child is able to complete complex tasks/things as they grow. Development involves learning skills such as tying shoe laces,skipping,or kicking a ball for example. From birth to adulthood children are continually growing,developing and learning. A child's development can be measured through social,emotional,physical and language developmental "milestones". It is,therefore important to apply an holistic approach to the child's development in a way that will address each of these areas throughout a child's life. Areas Of Development:

Physical Development: includes
·Movement Skills
·Gross and Fine Motor skills
·Hand eye co-ordination
Social and Emotional Development: includes
·forming relationships
·social skills
·caring for others
·aquiring empathy
·being self-reliant
·decision making
Intellectual Development: includes
·attention span
·how a child understands and processess information ·developing memory
·questioning and logical thinking skills
Language Development: includes
·understanding and aquiring language
·developing language and vocabularly

Physical development is grouped into 2 main areas - Fine Motor skills (the ability to use the small muscles within the body) Gross Motor skills (the ability to use the large muscles within the body) Fine Motor Skills

During a child's first year of life they will begin to practice holding and manipulating small objects. Doing this develops the child's ability to use their small muscles Gross Motor Skills
Gross motor skills develop rapidly up to 5 years old. They start with a child being able to gain control of their head and thenworks down the body (learning to sit,crawl and finally walk). A child uses their large muscles to acquire these skills ( eg their arms and legs)

Rate Of Development:
1 month old:
Physical Development
Gross motor skills:
·supine position - head is on one side the child lies flat ·prone position - head is still on one side but child can lift it ·reacts to sudden sounds
·closes eyes to bright light
·when sitting head lag develops (head falls forward,back curves) ·will turn towards light/sound/movement
·hands are tightly closed
·the child's reflexes help them to survive
Fine Motor Skills:
·gazes/watches people's faces (especially when being fed/talked to) ·can track objects with their eyes
Social And Emotional Development:
·totally reliant on adults
·start to smile (around 5 weeks old)
·explores their surroundings using their senses
·responds to sounds heard by making their own
·bonds/smiles(with mother)
Language And Intellectual Development
·communicates needs through sound
·communicates using crying
·communication occurs through physical closeness
·begins to coo/babble in response to adult interactions ·may copy the mouth movements and facial expressions of adults ·begins to smile in response to the smiles of adults ·follows objects with eyes

·develops concepts (becomes aware of physical sensations such as hunger) ·explores surroundings using their senses
·cries vigorously
·responds to high-pitched tones by moving arms/legs 3 Months Old:

Gross Motor Skills:
·turns from side to back
·in supine position - head is central
·in prone position - head and chest can be held and lifted from floor,back is straighter but some head lag still remains ·arms are waved and brought together
·legs are kicked (together and separate)
