CYP Core 3.1:Understand child and young person development

1 Understand the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years.

1.1 Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth -19 years:

Children’s development is continuous. They can develop at different time because they have different life experiences and that means that they develop at different rate and ways. Development does not mean only the physical growth of the children but also include the skills and knowledge that they are developing. Development is dividing into the following area:

Physical development: provides children with the abilities they need to explore and interact with the world around them.

Communication: the development of language is perhaps one of the most astounding things to observe. This area is about learning how to communicate with other people and it is linked to cognitive or intellectual development.

Cognitive or intellectual development: look at the way in which the brain processes information, the abilities associated with memory, reasoning, problem solving and thinking continue to emerge throughout the childhood.

Social, emotional and behavioural development: look at how individuals develop social skills and build relationships with other people and knowing which behaviour is acceptable and to have the ability to control emotions.

Moral: It is a major topic of interest in both physical and education and it is about the decisions of behaviour that children and young people take towards other.

All the areas of development are connect to each other and they work together.

Babies at birth:

Babies are born with many reflexes. Much of your baby’s activity in his/her first weeks of life is reflexive. For instance, when you put your finger in her mouth, he/ she doesn’t think about what to do, but sucks by reflex.

Physical development:

Swallowing and sucking reflexes, they help the babies to feed and swallow. Rooting reflex when the baby will move his head to look for nipple. Grasp reflex when the baby put their finger around and object that has touched the palm of their hand. Startle reflex when babies react by moving to a sudden light and sound. Walking and standing reflex when babies are held upright with their feet a firm surface.

Communication:

They cry when they are hungry or tired.
They can recognise smell and sound of their mothers.

Social, emotional and behaviour development:

Close contact between primary carer and baby, especially when feeding.

Babies at 1 month:

Physical development:

Sleep quite a lot, they can lift the head and change position, hands are usually close.

Communication:

Cries are becoming voluntary, indicating unhappiness, tiredness. Cognitive:

Babies stop crying because they hear a familiar voice.

Social, emotional and behaviour development:

They begin to smile and make noises.
They begin to learn to tell the different between themselves and other people. They are still totally dependent.

Babies at 3 months:

Physical:

They star sleep a little bite less and they are more alert.
They have grown in height and weight.
They continuous move arms and legs.

Communication

They smile back when they can see a smiling face.

Cognitive:

They can move the head and look around and follow adult movements around them.

Social, emotional and behavioural development:

They enjoying bath time.

Babies at 6 months:

Physical:

They can reach out and grab a toy and move it from one hand to another. They can now grab the adult’s hands and pull itself into a sitting position. They can sit for long period with support.

Communication:

Beginning to babble.
Regular repeated sound.
Begin to enjoy music and rhymes, particularly by action.

Cognitive:

They start explore toys and objects in the month and with their finger.
