160 Countries Celebrated the Earth Hour
As the clocks ticked 8:30 pm at their local time, people from 160 countries celebrated the Earth Hour. An Earth Hour which is celebrated to remind us that we all share the same planet we live in and we have the same responsibility for how well we live in it. Earth Hour is a global initiative conceptualized and supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held towards the end of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. The event, conceived by WWF and Leo Burnett, first took place in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008 and the event continues till now with increased participation. Recently, the event has been endorsed by the Governments around the world ensuring bigger participation from the countries. At the global media launch for Earth Hour 2013, CEO and Co-Founder Andy Ridley spoke about the movement's massive environmental outcomes beyond the hour. "People from all walks of life, from all nations around the world, are the lifeblood of the Earth Hour interconnected global community. They have proven time and time again that if you believe in something strongly enough, you can achieve amazing things. These stories aren't unique, this is happening all over the world," he said. Actress and co-founder of The Honest Company, Jessica Alba, is the Earth Hour 2013 global ambassador. Alba along with the other co-founders of eco-friendly family brand The Honest Company, Christopher Gavigan, Sean Kane and Brian Lee, are supporting the cause through a fun ‘I Will If You Will’ challenge, in line with the company’s focus on promoting health and sustainability.
