Engaging Students by Using SMART Boards
“Television didn’t transform education. Neither will the internet. But it will be another tool for teachers to use in their effort to reach students in the classroom. It will also be a means by which students learn outside the classroom” (Palfrey, John) Technology is a part of our day to day lives, weather we choose to keep up with it or not, it is everywhere we turn. Technology in the classroom is a great way to keep students focused on what is being taught and not being distracted by smart phones, iPods, etc. Having technology in the classroom puts the students at an advantage. Many students already know a lot about technology when a teacher integrates technology into the classroom; they are better their students learning experience. “Excitement in education and student productivity, the ability to get a result that you want from students, goes together and cannot be separated.” (Owens) This is why I believe smart boards are a great way to interact with the students. Putting technology into the classroom means, teaching basic computer skills and software programs to the students in one class instead of have a separate class. Effective technology integration needs appear state wide to better increase the students learning process in the classroom. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is used in the class room on a daily basis also when technology supports what your lesson plans. Technology can help teachers make their lessons more engaging and interactive. By giving teachers ways to use technology as a teaching tool, gives the teacher the ability to assess the different ways of learning the students may have. It also enhances the student’s relationship with their teacher. When technology is integrated probably into the classroom, it makes learning more worthwhile to the students. (Edutopia Staff) “The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that turns your computer and data projector into a powerful tool for teaching and presenting. With the computer image projected on the Board, simply use your finger and press on the large touch sensitive surface to control the computer. This allows your students or employee's to do presentations from the front of the room instead of having to be at the computer.” Electronic whiteboards also allow users to interact and touch the board to control any computer application creates and writes notes, draw diagrams and illustrate ideas. One can focus by highlighting key information with electronic ink and also capture images, notes or updates and save, print or e-mail notes. Using an interactive whiteboard helps you to simplify and work naturally at the Board with familiar, easy-to-use tools. (Martin) “People choose the SMART Board interactive whiteboard because it helps engage students and motivate them to learn. In 1991, it was the world's first interactive whiteboard.” Today, the SMART board is one of the most leading technologies in the classroom. The SMART board combines the white board with the technology of a computer; this makes it easier for students to engage in lessons that are being taught. “The touch-sensitive display connects to your computer and digital projector to show your computer image. The teacher can control computer applications directly from the display, write notes in digital ink and save your work to share later.” SMART Board interactive whiteboard is easy to use. If an instructor can use a computer, they can use a SMART Board. (Martin) Students see technology in their day to day life. This makes it easier for them to learn the advances of technology. The downfall about the advancement of technology is that teachers could have a hard time learning the new advances or even having the funding for new technology. We are faced with technology every day, if we do not start teaching our students the advances in technology they could fall behind and never catch up. Using technology in the...
