Social and emotional development,
It is very important to understand how children develop and to know that all areas of development are equally as important as each other. Children develop at a different rate, so it's impossible to tell exactly when a child will learn a given skill. However, the developmental milestones give a general idea of the changes to expect as a child gets older. Ages 0-3
By 6 months:
Raise head slightly when lying on stomach, hold head up for a few seconds, when supported, reach, grasp, and put objects in mouth, smile at familiar faces and voices.
Between 6 months and one year:
Roll from their backs onto their stomachs and push their head, chest and neck off the floor. Move from sitting with support to sitting alone. Rocks back and forth, sometimes crawling backward before moving forward. Transfer objects between hands. Throw objects, pick things up with thumb and one finger, drop and pick up toys. Pulls up to stand, walks holding on to furniture. May take a few steps without holding on and may stand alone.
Between one and two years:
Walk alone and walk backwards. May walk up steps and run. Pulls toys while walking. Drinks from a cup and eats with a spoon. Move to music. Paint with whole arm movement. Enjoy a picture book and turn two or three pages at a time. Builds towers of 4 or more blocks. Shake head for NO and wave goodbye.
Between two and three years:
Climbs well and runs easily. Walks up and down stairs, one foot on each step. Pedals a tricycle (3-wheel bike). Use a slide without help. Throw and catch a ball. Build a tall tower of blocks. Draw crosses and circles.
Social and emotional development
By 6 months:
Begin to realize she is a separate person from others and learn how body parts, like arms and legs, are attached. Can be comforted by a familiar adult. Begins to smile at people. Between 6 months and 9 months:
Knows familiar faces and begins to know if someone is a stranger. Likes to play with others, especially parents. Play peek-a-boo. Laugh aloud. Express several clearly differentiated emotions. Show anxiety when separated from primary caregiver. Feed themselves finger foods and hold a cup with two hands and drink with assistance. Between one and two years:
Express negative feelings for example cries when mom or dad leaves. Shows a lot of affection to family. Explores alone but with parent close by. Can drink from cup with lid. Loves to throw toys away in fun. Plays simple pretend, such as feeding a teddy bear. Begin to be helpful, such as by helping to put things away. Copies others and gets excited when with other children. Shows more and more independence. Shows defiant behaviour. Between two and three years:
Copies adults and friends. Shows a wide range of emotions. Sometimes plays with children, but not for long. Understands the idea of “mine” and “his” or “hers”. Display aggressive feelings and behaviours, prone to bursts of emotion tantrums. Indicate toileting needs (start potty training). Loves helping with the housework and other chores. Uses a spoon and a fork to eat. Participate in simple group activities, such as singing clapping or dancing.
Between 0 and 6 months:
Focus on and follow moving objects, including human faces. Recognize faces. Respond to familiar sounds. Looks around at things nearby and brings things to mouth. Shows curiosity about things and tries to get things that are out of reach. Between 6 months and one year:
Copies gestures. Follows simple directions like “where is mammy?” Recognises names. Knows how to use familiar objects. Enjoy looking at picture books. Uses pincer grasp well. Between one...
