You know those days were you sit down and feel like watching reality TV shows like, hoarders just so you can feel better about your life and think at least I don't have it as bad as that. Well The Glass Castle a memoir written by Jeannette Walls is that TV show but its written down pages for new readers to discover. In this book Jeannette Walls, tells of the horrific childhood she experienced being raised by alcoholic, manipulative, and selfish parents. Her parents Rex and Rose Mary Walls, are extremely dysfunctional and yet very intelligent people who force their children to learn how to take care of themselves by feeding, clothing, and protecting each other. This family is continuously forced to move around time after time due to the fathers alcohol abuse and not being able to keep a steady job. The theme of this story is how alcoholism affects not only the one that drinks but the family that surrounds them. The four children never have a stable home and rarely make any real friends. Not once do they get to have a normal life. The life we all take for granted everyday. Through-out there lives this family has many dreams and desires. If you were to ask what the person next to you what their dream was it would be something like a car or a new Iphone but all these kids wanted was to just have a real place to call home and food on the table. Except the father his dream was to build the Glass Castle. Designed by himself it was a life long dream but is the best example of dreams that are lost and never really came true. All her life he promised her he would build a this glass home for the family and that they would finally be happy and never worry again. Of course, it was only a dream. One that never had any chance of being fulfilled.
