In studying the first two years of development, I believe that all five areas are important and should be assessed equally. However, the emotional development is of utmost importance, and parent’s behavior is influential in shaping and molding their child’s emotional sense of self. “Early relationships help infants develop a working model, a set of assumptions that become a frame of reference for later life. It is a “model” because these early relationships are a prototype, or blueprint, for later relationships; it is “working” because, although it is used, it is not necessarily fixed or final.” (Berger, pg.189) The emotional bond a parent creates with an infant is essential to the infant’s brain growth and the natural maturation process, thus affecting the overall intellectual, social, language, physical and spiritual developments. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 NKJV) As a Christian we are instructed to be the guide for our children. Parents create the blueprint or structure for them so that when they grow up it is ingrained in their spirit. “Infants with secure attachment feel comfortable and confident. The caregiver becomes a base for exploration, providing assurance that enables exploration.” (Berger, pg. 196) Just like Christ is our base, rock and assurance, parents that create a secure emotional environment for their children, create a secure platform for their child.
