Reality T.V.

Many people, especially my friends, find it odd that I never watch TV. I had done my share of watching television, and came to the realization that it was an utter waste of time. Sure, some of TV has redeeming merit: news shows, the discovery channel, etc. But many people tend to watch reality shows, soap operas and other drivel instead of meaningful shows. Most reality TV is pointless and ludicrous. If reality shows are an accurate portrayal of reality, then please shoot me. I say we outlaw reality TV as false advertising as to what reality really is. But I do believe the people in the reality shows must have some healthy habits. How else could they have the energy to endure the hysteria and drama over trivial issues for prolonged periods of time. But some say it is harmless entertainment. I guess one person’s entertainment can be another person’s nausea. I have to be honest. I’m exaggerating. I don’t get sick to my stomach when watching reality TV. I get embarrassed; not for myself, but for the pitiful characters in the show.

While one can learn much by watching news shows and the discovery channel, one learns nothing by watching reality shows. Watching the news and being updated on the world around you is important. Being updated with the drama of the characters in reality TV shows is utterly worthless. For one thing, the characters have no character. They are superficial individuals who happen to be good looking. Because sex sells, there is usually a high dose of sex appeal. The episodes are designed to titillate. There is no other redeeming quality, except perhaps, the satisfaction of seeing someone in an embarrassing or weird situation.

TV can be addicting and can induce laziness. People who sit in front of the TV for hours instead of participating in any other type of activity are more likely to be overweight. This is a significant health problem today. Don’t these TV watchers know that if they get fat, they will never make it on a reality TV show?...
