Throughout their lives, many people encounter struggles with their weight and keeping it in a healthy range. According to Stanford Medicine, being overweight can lead to many health problems during life including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, sleep apnea, cancer, metabolic syndrome and psychosocial effects. Because of the many health concerns that are ever looming in the face of being overweight and obesity, there are many proven ways of combating these problems including a change in diet, exercise or environment, support groups and surgical treatment. Many people begin by spending time exercising; over many years exercise has been found to be a way of reaching a goal weight and then maintaining that goal weight as a way of staying healthy long into life. While the effects of exercising are different on everyone, the process of actually losing the weight can be difficult because of the amount of time it can take for you and others around you to see the change, especially when they aren’t looking for it. In the process of this long road and without any social support present, many people give up or experience a yo-yo weight where their weight goes down but then back up as time progresses and this is no longer a top priority. One way to alleviate this lack of persistence is to surround themselves with support figures that won’t let them give up. This support will not allow their failures to be seen as failures, but only as stumbling blocks that were put in their way to show how much drive they have and that they can do this if they set their mind to it. This support could be one person or a group of people whose purpose is to workout with the candidate and keep them from falling off of the bandwagon. This person, who is also trying to either reach or maintain a healthy weight, does not need any special qualification.
