Expected pattern of development for children + young people
From birth to 19 years

Includes movement skills, gross motor skills, fine motor skills and eye hand coordination. Social and emotional development
Includes forming relationships, learning social skills, caring for others, self reliance, making decisions, developing self confidence and dealing with emotions. Intellectual development
Includes attention span, understanding information, reasoning, developing memory and logical thinking Language
Includes understanding and acquiring language, developing vocabulary and body language

Age 0 - 3 years


By 6 months a child will
Turn head towards sound and movement
Watch an adults face when feeding
Smile at familiar faces and voices
Look and reach for objects
Hold and shake a rattle
Put everything in their mouths
Rolls over

Between 6 months and 1 year
Can sit unaided
Begins to crawl
Pull up/ push against furniture to stand
Raise arms to be lifted
Turn and look up when they hear their name
Pass objects from hand to hand
Look for objects that have been hidden or dropped
Reaches towards food

Between 1 + 2 years
Begins to walk
Sits alone
Feeds themselves
Push and pull things when playing
Wave goodbye
Point and make noises to indicate wants
Shake head for no
Crawl upstairs
Bang objects together
Build tower of few bricks
Holds crayon in palm

Between 2 + 3 years
Kneels to play
Throws balls
Kick balls
Pours liquids
Uses pencil to scribble


Newborn to 3 months
Responds to adult face and voice
Dependant on adults for reassurance and comfort, quietens when held/cuddled

Between 6-9 months
Enjoys company of others
Enjoys games such as peek and boo
Shows affection to known people

Between 1 - 2 years
Likes to please adults
May become distressed/anxious if separated from known adults May use comfort object
Plays alongside other children

Between 2 - 3 years
Developing own sense of identity
Demanding of adult attention, jealous of attention given to others, reluctant to share things Prone to bursts of emotional tantrums
Enjoys playing with adults/ older children. Plays with children of similar age for short periods


Between 0 and 3 years
Imitates what others do
Tries out ways of behaving in play
Becoming more confident


Between 0 and 3 months
Makes happy sounds
Responds to music and sounds

Between 6 - 12 months
Starts to babble
Makes 4/5 different sounds
Will show feelings by squealing with pleasure or crying

Between 1 - 2 years
Starts to use single words
Understands key words in sentences
Will copy some words

Between 2 - 3 years
Starts to put words together to form sentences
Asks questions, What, Why etc
Will join in with well known songs
Puts actions to words
Using several hundred words

Age 3 - 7 years


3 years
Jumps with feet together
Walks on tip toes
Walks up and down stairs
Catches a ball
Can thread beads onto a lace
Can eat using knife and fork

4 years
Is able to use pedals
Can throw with aim
Can use scissors
Can draw picture instead of scribbling

5 years
Is able to hop
Can kick a ball with aim
Handles pencils with control
Can copy shapes and write some letters

6 - 7 years
Is able to skip
Can ride a bike
Can jump from height
Can climb confidently
Is able to write
Can thread a needle
Is able to do buttons and shoe laces


3 - 4 years
Becoming more independent and self motivated
Able to cope with unfamiliar surroundings and adults...
