Discuss Factors and Theories that Influence Children and Young People’s Development and How These Influence Current Practice.
Child development from birth to adulthood was widely ignored throughout history and children were viewed as mini adults. Not all development was ignored although the focus was mainly on abnormal behaviour. This in modern times can be known as developmental delay. Personal factors can influence a child’s development such as a pupils health, if a pupil is off school due to ill health for a significant period of time delays in education and development are likely to occur. It is important to recognise this as it can have a negative impact on a child’s emotional development which in turn could lead to development delay in other areas. Ensuring a holistic approach to development can help to prevent and ultimately improve these. External factors such as family situations, pupils background, poverty and deprivation and even a child’s early education can all play a key role in an individual child’s development. If a child has never attended a school before due to just moving to the country or being home schooled then the school environment can be terrifying. Inclusion is important in these situations so that the child can be fully supported. An understanding of child development is essential, allowing us to fully appreciate the cognitive, emotional, physical, social and educational growth that children go through from birth and into early adulthood. Some of the major theories of child development are known as grand theories; they attempt to describe every aspect of development, often using a stage approach.
