Outcome 1
1.1 Describe the expected pattern of children and young peoples development from birth to 19 years.

a) Children develop and mature at different rates. There are however certain expectations for their development between the ages of 0 and 19 years. The expected physical development for a baby of 0-6 months at this stage is laying on their backs and side, they are also learning to suck. Slightly older newborns are beginning to learn to move their head with their eyes, hold a rattle in one hand this is using gross motor skills. They have also begun to hold their head and are able to sit with support also rolling completely over from their back to their front or their front to their backs.

Babies from the age of 6-12months have become sightly stronger to newborns, they have learnt to sit alone unaided, possibly learnt how to crawl or bottom shuffle as well as learning to point to wanted objects whilst making babbling and cooing sounds.

Babies aged 12-18months have become even stronger and becoming more familiar with their bodies, the expected guideline for this age is, the majority should be standing while holding but also be taking their first steps, they can now put cubes into a box when shown. Most babies at this point should be able to use a spoon to attempt to feed their self.

Toddlers aged 18-24months are now able to walk up and down stairs with both feet on one step, some toddlers may now be able to feed themselves with finger foods such as sandwiches,crisps, pizza and a yoghurt. Some toddlers may even be able to draw simple things like circles. Toddlers at this stage may be putting on their own shoes but on but only capable of undoing laces.

Toddlers aged 2-3 years have now learnt how to use their gross and fine motor skills, they are able to stand and walk on tiptoe, kick a ball confidently, jump from low steps I.e. the bottom stair, turn single pages in a book as well as pedal a bike and thread large beads on thread. Toddlers this age often really enjoy simple jigsaw puzzles.

Children aged 3-5 years have developed even more and become even stronger within such a short time scale, you will find children are now very independent, learning to run faster, hit a ball with a bat, form letters to write their own name, accurately use safe children scissors also learning to skip. Children at this stage are potty training or even completely dry day and night.

Children aged 5-7 years have now started school full time within the United Kingdom, they can work independently for a short while. The have now developed finer manipulation when building with bricks or making a jigsaw, some children may have full control of a pencil and be able to do a more detailed drawing.

Children aged 7-11 years have now discovered roller blading, balancing on a wall or beam, able to tie and UN-tie laces, read a book independently and able to write a sentence with full understanding of basic punctuation. Some girls aged around 10 years have now begun puberty with a growth spurt and increase in body strength.

Older children/ teenagers aged 11-16 years have now all begun puberty boys puberty is around 13-16 years and they will be stronger than girls. For girls puberty is normally complete by the age of 14 years once their periods have begun.

Teenagers aged 16-19 years are usually fully developed by this stage.

b) Newborn babies aged 0-6 months communicate by crying, they are learning to move their head to sounds. Some babies stop crying a the sound of a human voice except in cases where the baby is extremely upset, babies closer to 5-6 months are starting to communicate by cooing and responding to parent/careers voice. Babies blink to bright lights and stare and their career. Babies at this age are learning new things constantly.
