Week Five Homework Exercise
Answer the following questions, covering material from Ch. 11 of the Methods in Behavioral Research text:
How may a researcher enhance the generalizability of the results of a single case design? (1 point)
How to enhance generalizability of results of a single case design: The procedures for use with a single subject can be replicated with other subjects, greatly enhancing the generalizability of the results. Reports of research that employs single case experimental procedures do present the results from several subjects and often in several settings. The tradition in single case research has been to present the results from each subject individually rather than group data and to present overall means.
What is program evaluation? Provide an example. (2 points)
Program evaluation: is research on programs that are proposed and implemented to achieve some positive effect on a group of individuals.
Example: DARE program designed to reduce drug use in schools. This program is conducted in conjunction with local police departments. Program evaluation applies the many research approaches to investigate these types of programs.
What are researchers examining in an efficacy assessment? (1 points)
Researchers are examining: Once it is shown that a program does have its intended effect, researchers must determine whether it is “worth it.” The cost of the program must be weighed against its benefits. The researchers must determine whether the resources used to implement the program might be put to some better use.
Unlike true experiments, quasi-experimental designs lack random assignment to conditions. (1 point)
Why might a researcher use a quasi-experimental design rather than a true experimental design? (1 point)
Why use a quasi-experimental design: Quasi-experimental designs address the need to study the effect of an independent variable in settings in which the...
