Question 1
Cowper presents this poem to the reader in the voice of a slave. During the 18th century, African Americans, who were mostly slaves, were considered to be mere property and had very few rights, if any, as human beings. This poem is critiquing slavery and it shows, from the voice of a slave, how horrible slavery really was.

Forced from Home and all its pleasures
          Afric's coast I left forlorn,
          To encrease a stranger's treasures

Although various groups will read this poem, the primary audience is white pro-slavery owners. This poem was meant to leave a lasting impression on them through graphic details, comparisons and religion. Religion, self-association, and gruesome scenes are effective ways to get someone to remember what a certain subject. These three components are what would help the speaker convey their thoughts and get the reader thinking. This poem is to instill guilt into the slave owners. http://commons.marymount.edu/thenegroscomplaint/close-reading/ For example, during this time period religion was very important. Slaves were told about who God was and to deny him would be blasphemy. In a passage of the poem, the speaker brings up God and makes it a point to state that it was the slave owners that taught them about God. This was a very smart tactic in getting the message across. God was taught as being a loving and merciful God to the slaves.
